James Worthy is a former NBA small forward who enjoyed a 13-year professional career from 1982-1994, the entirety of which he played for the Los Angeles Lakers. Worthy won three NBA Championships with the Lakers in 1985, 1987 and 1988, averaging no less than 17.6 points per game during those three campaigns. Worthy earned the nickname “Big Game James” for his consistent high-level performance in the playoffs. Worthy recorded a per game average of 17.6 during the regular season in his career and 21.1 points on average per game in 143 playoff appearances. His postseason heroics earned him Finals MVP honors in 1988. Worthy is a 2003 inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was seven times named an All-Star from 1986-1992 and, during his first year in the NBA, he was named to the All-Rookie First Team. His jersey #42 was retired by the Lakers.
Worthy was the first overall pick by Los Angeles in the 1982 draft. He played college basketball from 1979-1982 at North Carolina, where he was a consensus First-team All-American as a senior. That same year, he helped lead UNC to a National Championship and was named the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player. His jersey #52 was retired by the Tar Heels. In 2006, he became a member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Worthy’s philanthropic endeavors include the founding of the James Worthy Foundation as well as supporting organizations such as Boys & Girls Club, YMCA and Big Brothers of America.
