One of the most accomplished women’s basketball players of all-time, Sue Bird is a four-time Olympic gold medalist and four-time WNBA champion with the Seattle Storm, with whom she has played since being selected as the 1st pick overall in the 2002 WNBA Draft. Bird has been named to 11 WNBA All-Star Games and is the league’s all-time leader in games played and assists. In 2011, she was named one of the WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All-Time. Representing the United States, Bird won Olympic gold medals as part of the U.S. Women’s National Team at the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Games along with four FIBA World Cups. She is one of just 11 female basketball players to ever win an Olympic gold medal, WNBA Championship and NCAA title, joining such greats as Tamika Catchings, Sheryl Swoopes, Cynthia Cooper and Diana Taurasi.
Since 2004, during the WNBA’s offseason she has also competed overseas in Russia with Dynamo Moscow (2004-2006), Spartak Moscow Region (2006-2011) and UMMC Ekaterinburg (2011-2014.) Bird’s playing career in Russia has been highly successful as she has captured five Russian National League titles and five EuroLeague championships. Prior to her professional career, Bird played college basketball at UConn from 1998-2002 under Hall of Fame coach Geno Auriemma. She helped the Huskies to two NCAA Championships and, in 2002, won the Naismith Award, Wade Trophy and Honda Sports Award as the top female college basketball player in the United States. She was also recognized three times as the best point guard in the country by winning the Nancy Lieberman Award. Bird was born on October 16 in Syosset, New York.
