Adam Oates played center for 19 seasons in the NHL from 1985-2004 with the Detroit Red Wings (1985-1989), St. Louis Blues (1989-1992), Boston Bruins (1992-1997), Washington Capitals (1997-2001), Philadelphia Flyers (2002), Anaheim Ducks (2002-2003) and Edmonton Oilers (2003-2004). Oates became a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012 while in 2017, he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players of all-time. When he retired after the 2003-2004 season, Oates had accrued 1,079 assists, which then ranked fifth in NHL history.
A five-time All-Star (1991-1994, 1997), Oates was similarly named a Second Team All-Star for the 1990-1991 season. In back-to-back seasons from 1989-1991, Oates eclipsed 100 points, setting a career-high in points (115), goals (25) and assists (90) during the latter campaign. Oates would go on to shatter those numbers three seasons later during his second season with the Bruins as he scored 45 goals to go along with 97 assists, good for 142 points, all of which were career-bests. He produced another 100-point campaign in 1993-1994, scoring 32 goals with 80 assists.
Oates was born on August 27, 1962 in Weston, Ontario and played college hockey at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), where he was twice named All-American and helped lead the Pioneers in 1985 to an NCAA title. After his playing days, he served as a coaching assistant for the Tampa Bay Lightning and co-head coach of the New Jersey Devils. From 2012-2014, he was Washington’s head coach, compiling a 65-48 overall record.
