Mike Modano is a former NHL center who played professionally from 1989-2011, primarily with the Minnesota North Stars from 1989-1993 and then Dallas Stars from 1993-2010 after the North Stars relocated to the Lone Star state. Modano played his final NHL season with the Detroit Red Wings in 2010-2011. A 2014 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Modano in 2017 was named by the NHL as one of its 100 Greatest Players of all-time.
For the 1998-1999 season, Modano played in 77 games with the Stars, scoring 34 goals to go along with 47 assists. That year, Dallas captured a Stanley Cup title. Modano broke into the NHL in 1989-1990 with flare, registering 75 points in 80 games en route to being named to the NHL All-Rookie Team. A five-time All-Star (1993, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003), Modano’s # 9 jersey was retired by the Stars in 2014.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Modano is the NHL’s all-time leader in goals (561) and points (1,374) by a player born in the United States. Similarly, his 146 playoff points and 1,499 games played as a forward are both NHL records by an American player. Modano is the holder of a variety of Minnesota/Dallas franchise records as well, including games played, goals, assists and points. As founder of the Mike Modano Foundation, Inc., he has raised money for numerous charitable organizations that are involved helping children, canines and veterans. In 2019, the Stars hired him as a front office advisor.
