Andy Benes is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher who played in the majors for 14 seasons for the San Diego Padres (1989-1995), Seattle Mariners (1995), St. Louis Cardinals (1996-1997, 2000-2002) and Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-1999). Benes was named an All-Star in 1993 and led the National League in strikeouts in 1994. In 1996, he went 18-10 and recorded a 3.83 ERA in route to finishing third in the NL Cy Young Award voting. He also played internationally for Team USA and won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and a silver medal at the Baseball World Cup in Rome.

Benes grew up in Evansville, Indiana and played collegiately at the University of Evansville. In 1988, he was named Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball and received the Rotary Smith Award as the nation’s top collegiate baseball player. That same year, Benes was drafted by the Padres with the first overall pick. He made his major league debut on August 11, 1989 and was named by The Sporting News as the NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year. Benes is the brother of Alan Benes, who also pitched in the majors. The two were teammates in 1996-1997 and 2000-2001.
