On October 31, 2003, Bethany Hamilton’s life changed forever after she was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing off the North Shore of Kauai in Hawaii. The 13-year old endured several surgeries after losing her left arm and more than 60% of her blood. But due to her strong faith in Christ and positive attitude, Hamilton not only recovered but returned to the water one month after being attacked. Just a couple months later in January of 2004, Hamilton returned to surfing competition and finished fifth. A little more than a year after the life-changing attack, Hamilton won her first national title by winning the Explorer Women’s Division at the NSSA National Championships.
Hamilton’s incredible story and strong faith has served as an inspiration to many. Hamilton has written numerous books, including “Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family and Fighting to Get Back on the Board”, which was subsequently made into a movie, along with “Rise Above: A 90-Day Devotional”, “Be Unstoppable: The Art of Never Giving Up” and “Soul Surfer Devotions” among others. Hamilton was also the subject of the 2019 movie “Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable.” Looking for a way to give-back, Hamilton founded the Friends of Bethany Foundation, which later became known as the Beautifully Flawed Foundation. The foundation provides hope through Christ to people impacted by a broken world. Today, Hamilton is a wife and devoted mother to two boys and continues to inspire people by sharing her story of hope, courage and faith to audiences around the country.
