One of the most successful gymnasts of all-time, Shannon Miller won a total of seven medals – two gold, two silver and three bronze - at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. She won two gold medals in the balance beam and team competitions in 1996 as a member of the United States team known as the “Magnificent Seven” that featured Amy Chow, Dominique Dawes, Amanda Borden, Kerri Strug, Dominique Moceanu and Jaycie Phelps. Miller’s five medals at the 1992 Summer Games were the most won by any American athlete at those Olympics.
In total for her career, Miller won 59 medals at international events and 49 at national competitions, over half of which were gold. She became the first American gymnast to ever capture two all-around world titles. Miller was inducted in 2006 into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame for her individual accomplishments and in 2008 as a member of the 1996 team. In 2006, she also became a member of the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame and, in 2017, the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. A bronze statue of Miller’s likeness stands in a park named in her honor in Edmond, Oklahoma, her hometown.
After retiring from competition, Miller graduated from the U. of Houston with a degree in marketing and entrepreneurship and from Boston College with a law degree. In 2010, Miller founded Shannon Miller Lifestyle with a mission of helping women prioritize their health. In 2011, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Miller, who is currently free of cancer and advocates for awareness, survivorship, research and the importance of early detection, travels the country empowering and encouraging people to overcome whatever challenges they face. Miller is author of the book “It’s Not About Perfect: Competing for My Country and Fighting for My Life.” She resides in Florida with her husband and has two children.
