Billy Wagner is a retired pitcher who played in the majors for 16 seasons for the Houston Astros (1995-2003), Philadelphia Phillies (2004-2005), New York Mets (2006-2009), Boston Red Sox (2009) and Atlanta Braves (2010). He was a seven-time All-Star and was named the recipient of the National League Rolaids Relief Man Award in 1999. Wagner finished ten times ranked in the top 10 in the National League in saves and, at the time of his retirement, was one of just five relief pitchers to have recorded 400 saves in a career. Wagner was part of a combined no-hitter while pitching for the Astros in 2003.
Wagner grew up in Virginia and played collegiately at Ferrum College, where he set single-season records in the NCAA for strikeouts per nine innings (19.5) and least number of hits allowed per nine innings (1.88). He was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Wagner was picked by the Astros in the 1st round of the 1993 daft and was used as a starting pitcher during his time in the minor leagues. Wagner made his MLB debut on September 13, 1995. After retiring from baseball, Wagner served as coach for the baseball team at The Miller School of Albermarle in Charlottesville, Virginia.
