John Franco is a former MLB pitcher who played 21 seasons from 1984-2001 and 2003-2005 is best remembered for his time with the New York Mets from 1990-2001 and 2003-2004. He also played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1984-1989 and Houston Astros in 2005. Franco was used primarily as a relief pitcher during his career and made his debut in the majors for the Reds on April 24, 1984. In total for his career, he appeared in 1,119 games, posting a 90-87 overall record with an ERA of 2.89 along with 975 strikeouts. His 424 saves ranks first all-time among lefties and fifth overall behind Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman, Lee Smith and Francisco Rodriguez.
In 1988 and 1990, Franco was the winner of the National League Rolaids Relief Man Award while four times he was named an All-Star in 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1990. Franco’s 39 saves led MLB in 1988 and he went on to lead the league in saves two additional times, in 1990 with 33 and 1994 with 30. In 2003 and 2004, Franco served as the team captain for the Mets and, in recognition of the 15 total years he spent in a New York uniform, he was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 2012. He is also a member of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame and Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame. He was born on September 17, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York and attended college at St. John’s.
