Buck Showalter managed in the majors for 20 seasons for the New York Yankees (1992-1995), Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-2000), Texas Rangers (2003-2006) and Baltimore Orioles (2010-2018). He was three times named American League Manager of the Year in 1994, 2004 and 2014 and recorded an overall record of 1,551-1,517. Among his accomplishments were managing the Yankees in 1995 to their first playoff berth since 1981, leading the Diamondbacks to their first-ever appearance in the playoffs in 1999 after winning the NL West and managing the Orioles to an AL East title in 2014. After his managing days, Showalter worked a baseball analyst for ESPN and YES Network for Yankees games.
Born on May 23, 1956, Showalter attended Chipola Junior College before transferring to Mississippi State, where he received All-American honors and set a school record in 1977 with a .459 batting average. He was picked by the Yankees in the 1977 draft (5th round) and went on to spend seven years in their minor league system. Showalter first got into coaching when he was hired to manage the Oneonta Yankees in 1985, where he spent two seasons. After managing the Fort Lauderdale Yankees and Albany-Colonie Yankees, where he named Baseball America’s Minor League Manager of the Year in 1989, Showalter moved up to the big leagues in 1990 when he was hired to serve on the Yankees’ coaching staff before being named manager in 1992.
