Bucky Dent is a retired shortstop who played in the majors from 1973-1984 and is best remembered for his time with the New York Yankees from 1977-1982. He also played for the Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals. Dent was a three-time All-Star and played an integral role in the Yankees’ back-to-back World Series titles in 1977 and 1978. Dent will forever be linked to the 1978 season when he hit a three-run homer against the Boston Red Sox in a tie-breaker game that helped propel the Yankees to a 5-4 win, a spot in the postseason and ultimately a Word Series win. In that year’s Fall Classic, Dent hit .417 in route to earning MVP honors.
After retiring from playing, Dent spent time as a coach at both the minor league and major league levels. Besides managing the Yankees for a short time over the course of two seasons in 1989-1990, he also coached for the Rangers and under Joe Torre for the St. Louis Cardinals. Dent was born on November 25, 1951 in Savannah, Georgia. He went to Hialeah (Florida) High School and was selected by the White Sox with the 6th overall pick of the 1st round in the 1970 draft. He made his MLB debut on June 1, 1973.
