Chris Chambliss played first base in the majors from 1971-1988 with the Cleveland Indians (1971-1974), New York Yankees (1974-1979, 1988) and Atlanta Braves (1980-1986). He is best remembered for his time with the Yankees, where he played an important role in helping the team capture back-to-back World Series titles in 1977 and 1978.
Chambliss made his MLB debut with Cleveland on May 28, 1971 and went on to play in 111 games that season, batting .275 with nine home runs and 48 RBI, a performance that earned him A.L. Rookie of the Year honors. In 1976 with New York, he recorded a career-high 96 RBI, hitting 17 home runs and batting .293 in route to his lone All-Star selection. That season, he placed fifth in A.L. MVP voting. As a member of the Braves in 1982, Chambliss would once more gather MVP votes after he belted a career-high 20 home runs with 86 RBI while hitting .270.
After his playing days, Chambliss enjoyed a long coaching career, notably with the Yankees from 1996-2000 working under manager Joe Torre as the team’s hitting coach. During that time he won an additional four World Series rings in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. Chambliss also coached with the St. Louis Cardinals (1993-1995), New York Mets (2002), Cincinnati Reds (2004-2006) and Seattle Mariners (2011-2012).
