Chris Spielman enjoyed a successful college and NFL career as a linebacker, playing collegiately at Ohio State from 1984-1987 and in the NFL for 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1988-1995) and Buffalo Bills (1996-1997). Considered one of the all-time great Buckeyes, Spielman was named a consensus All-American in 1986 and 1987. As a senior during the latter year, he was named the Chic Harley Award recipient by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, which recognized him as the top collegiate football player in the nation, and also won the Vic Lombardi Trophy, honoring his on-field prowess as well as his character and leadership qualities. In 2009, Spielman was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
After being selected by the Lions in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft in 1988, Spielman would go on to be named to the Pro Bowl four times and a first-team All-Pro three times. He was also named the Lions’ defensive MVP in 1993 and 1994. During his time in Detroit, he failed to record less than 125 tackles just once. Spielman posted 153 tackles as a rookie in 1988 and in 1994, set a career-high and Lions single-season record with 195 tackles. In total during his time in the Motor City, Spielman recorded a franchise record 1,020 tackles.
Shortly after his playing days ended, Spielman launched a successful career in broadcasting, working as a college football analyst for 15 years with ESPN before joining the FOX Sports as an NFL analyst in 2016. He has additionally hosted a radio show in Columbus on 105.7 The Zone. Spielman is also known for his work in the community and philanthropic efforts. In memory of his late wife Stefanie, Spielman has helped raise over $22 million for the Stefanie Spielman Patience Assistance Fund and Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
