Ed McCaffrey played wide receiver in the NFL from 1991-2003, most notably with the Denver Broncos from 1995-2003 but also the New York Giants from 1991-1993 and San Francisco 49ers in 1994. McCaffrey won three Super Bowls during his career, one with San Francisco (Super Bowl XXIX) and two with Denver (Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII). In 2009, McCaffrey was named a member of the Broncos’ 50th Anniversary Team along with such franchise greats as John Elway, Steve Atwater, Rod Smith, Terrell Davis, Karl Mecklenburg and Champ Bailey.
McCaffrey was born on August 17, 1968 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, He attended college at Stanford, where he was named a first-team All American and first-team All-Pac-10 selection in 1990. After college, McCaffrey was a 3rd round draft pick by the Giants in 1991, where he spent three seasons and enjoyed his best year in the Big Apple in 1992, when he caught 49 passes for 610 yards and 5 scores. After signing with San Francisco in 1994, where he spent one season, McCaffrey caught 11 passes for 131 yards in a season that culminated with the 49ers defeating San Diego in Super Bowl XXIX, 49-26.
McCaffrey’s career took off once he landed in Denver, where he spent the last nine seasons of his career. In 1998 with Denver as one of quarterback John Elway’s favorite targets, he caught 64 passes for 1,053 yards and 10 touchdowns, quickly setting new career-highs in all three categories in route to helping the Broncos to a Super Bowl XXIX title. He followed up his 1998 Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro performance with 71 catches for 1,018 yards in 1999, helping the Broncos to their second consecutive title game and victory in Super Bowl XXXIII. In 2000, McCaffrey posted new career-highs in catches (101) and yards (1,317) while scoring nine touchdowns.
After his playing days ended, McCaffrey served as head football coach at Valor Christian High School in Colorado for two seasons. In 2020, he was named head coach at the University of Northern Colorado. McCaffrey and his wife Lisa have four sons, each of whom played football, including Christian, a star running back for the Carolina Panthers.
