Known as one of the hardest-hitting safeties in NFL history, Steve Atwater played from 1989-1999, primarily with the Denver Broncos (1989-1998) but also the New York Jets (1999). Atwater was the starting safety for the Broncos’ teams led by quarterback John Elway that captured back-to-back Super Bowl wins (XXXII, XXXIII). A member of the Broncos Ring of Honor and NFL 1990s All-Decade Team, Atwater was named to the Pro Bowl eight times in his career and earned first-team All-Pro honors twice. He was inducted in 2020 into the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with Isaac Bruce, Steve Hutchinson, Edgerrin James, Troy Polamalu, Jimmy Johnson and Bill Cowher.
After being picked by the Broncos in the 1st round of the 1989 draft, Atwater posted 129 tackles as a rookie while the next season in 1990, he set a career-high with 173 tackles. In five straight seasons between 1989-1993, Atwater recorded over 100 tackles. His performances in 1993 and 1995 earned him first-team All-AFC honors from United Press International. In total, Atwater recorded 1,180 tackles and 24 interceptions during his career. He played college football at Arkansas and is considered one of the best players in school history. Atwater was named to the Razorback All-Century Team and is a member of the school’s Sports Hall of Honor. After his playing days, Atwater worked in the Broncos front office.
