Eddie Murray played in the majors for 21 seasons from 1977-1997 as a designated hitter and first baseman with the Baltimore Orioles (1977-1988, 1996), L.A. Dodgers (1989-1991, 1997), New York Mets (1992-1993), Cleveland Indians (1994-1996) and Anaheim Angels (1997). Murray, along with Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Alex Rodriguez and Rafael Palmeiro, is one of just five players in MLB history to amass 3,000 hits (3,255) and 500 home runs (504). His 1,917 RBI is tops all-time for a switch-hitter. He became a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility in 2003. An eight-time All-Star, Baltimore honored Murray by retiring his jersey, unveiling a statue of his likeness at Oriole Park and inducting him into the Orioles Hall of Fame. He was ranked by The Sporting News in 1998 as the 77th best player of all-time on its 100 Greatest Players list.
Murray made his MLB debut with the Orioles on April 7, 1977 and, in his first full season in 1978, Murray batted .283 with 27 homers and 88 RBI in route to earning A.L. Rookie of the Year honors. The 1981 season saw Murray finish 5th in A.L. MVP voting after leading the league in home runs (22) and RBI (78) despite playing in only 99 games. Murray in 1982 and 1983 finished runner-up for A.L. MVP honors to Robin Yount and Cal Ripken Jr. respectively. During the latter year, Murray helped Baltimore to the 1983 World Series title while winning the first of his three Silver Slugger Awards (he also won three straight Gold Gloves from 1982-1984). After retiring from playing, Murray worked as a hitting coach for the Indians and Dodgers.
