Jim Palmer pitched in the majors for 19 years from 1965-1967 and 1969-1984 with the Baltimore Orioles. One of the most dominant pitchers of his era, Palmer won three World Series titles with Baltimore (1966, 1970, 1983) and is the only pitcher ever to win a World Series game in three different decades. In 1973, he recorded a 22-9 mark with a 2.40 ERA and 158 strikeouts, a performance that earned him the A.L. Cy Young. Palmer’s 186 wins registered during the 1970s gave him the most wins of any pitcher during the decade. Considered the greatest pitcher in Orioles history, Palmer’s jersey #22 was retired by Baltimore and he is a member of the Orioles Hall of Fame. In 1990, he became a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
From 1975-1977, Palmer led the A.L. every year in wins. In 1975 he went 23-11 with an MLB-low ERA of 2.09, winning his second Cy Young Award. The next season in 1976, Palmer won his third Cy Young Award, this time behind a 20-win, 2.91-ERA season. Aside from the three seasons that he won the award, Palmer received Cy Young votes in five other seasons, finishing in the top five every time and runner-up twice in 1977 and 1982. He also was awarded four consecutive Gold Gloves from 1976-1979. After his playing days, Palmer embarked on a successful broadcasting career, serving as a color commentator for ABC and ESPN and later the Orioles.
