Ernie Johnson has enjoyed a long and illustrious career as an award-winning sportscaster. He currently works for Turner Sports as the host of the network’s NBA coverage, including “Inside the NBA” along with Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith. He also serves as the lead play-by-play voice of the network’s coverage of Major League Baseball and the PGA Tour. He is a recipient of multiple Sports Emmy Awards, including in 2002 when he shared the honor with Bob Costas for Outstanding Sports Personality, Studio Host. He was the outright winner of the award in 2006.
Johnson got his start in broadcasting while attending the University of Georgia in 1977 when he went to work for WAGQ-FM as the sports and news director. After graduating he moved to Macon, Georgia to work as a news anchor for WMAZ-TV. He would later work as a reporter for WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, South Carolina and WSB-TV in Atlanta until he was hired by Turner Sports in 1989. Besides hosting “Inside the NBA” since 1990, other broadcast assignments have included the Olympics, Wimbledon, FIFA World Cup, NFL, NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, Atlanta Braves and Goodwill Games. Johnson has also worked as the sportscaster voice on numerous video games, including NBA Live 98 and NBA 2K.
A devout Christian, Johnson and his wife Cheryl have a biological son and daughter along with four adopted children, included a son from Romania with special needs. In 2017, Johnson released his best-selling memoir titled “Unscripted: The Unpredictable Moments That Make Life Extraordinary”. He has also been active in the community, supporting numerous faith-based charitable organizations such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Samaritan’s Feet and Athletes in Action. Johnson was born on August 7, 2956 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His father was Ernie Johnson Sr., a former pitcher and play-by-play broadcaster for the Braves.
