Fergie Jenkins is a former MLB pitcher whose career spanned from 1965-1983 with the Philadelphia Phillies (1965-1966), Chicago Cubs (1966-1973, 1982-1983), Texas Rangers (1974-1975, 1978-1981) and Boston Red Sox (1976-1977). A three-time All-Star, Jenkins’ jersey #31 has been retired by the Cubs and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991, becoming the first Canadian baseball player to be inducted and the only one until Larry Walker gained entry in 2020. He is also a member of the Rangers Hall of Fame.
Jenkins in 1971 pitched an astounding 325 innings, winning 24 games while posting a 2.77 ERA. He additionally pitched 30 complete games and had three shutouts. That season, he won the N.L. Cy Young Award and placed 7th in MVP voting. From 1967-1974, Jenkins received either Cy Young or MVP votes in five of eight seasons. Similarly, during that time he never pitched less than 271 innings in a given season while recording a minimum of 170 strikeouts every year.
In 1971 and 1974, he led National League and American League in wins, respectively, and finished runner-up for the A.L. Cy Young Award in the latter season. Considered one of the greatest Canadian baseball players of all-time, Jenkins was named the Canadian Press Male Athlete of the Year four times and, in 1979, was named a member of the Order of Canada. A talented athlete, Jenkins played basketball for the legendary Harlem Globetrotters during the baseball offseason from 1967-1969.
