Howie Long is a current sportscaster and retired defensive lineman who played in the National Football League for 13 years from 1981 – 1993 for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders. One of the most dominating defensive ends of all-time, Long was named to the Pro Bowl eight times and was a three-time First-Team All-Pro pick. He was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 and is a member of the league’s 1980’s All-Decade Team. Long played an integral role in the Raiders’ winning Super Bowl XVIII over the Washington Redskins, 38-9. He became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
He was picked in 1981 by the Raiders in the 2nd round of the NFL draft out of Villanova, where he lettered four years and was named an All-American (honorable mention) his senior season. Long was born on January 6, 1960 in Somerville, Massachusetts. He competed in football, track and basketball during his time at Milford High School and received Scholastic Coach All-America honors in football his last season.
After retiring from playing, Long embarked on a successful broadcast career and has worked as a studio analyst for Fox Sports’ coverage of the NFL since 1994. Long was nominated for a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Studio Analyst for 10 straight years between 1997-2006 and won the award in 1997. He was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2019. Additionally, Long has appeared in numerous movies, including such movies as Broken Arrow, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Firestorm and That Thing You Do! A popular pitchman, he has appeared in campaigns for Coors Light, Campbell’s Chunky Soup, Hanes, Pizza Hut, Chevrolet, Honda and Nike among others. He also wrote a book titled “Football For Dummies”, which was published by Wiley Publishing.
