Hunter Smith is a retired punter who played in the NFL from 1999-2010 with the Indianapolis Colts (1999-2008) and Washington Redskins (2009-2010). Upon being selected in the 7th round of the 1999 draft by Indianapolis, Smith made his presence known early as he was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team by both Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers Association. In 2000, Smith earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors while twice in 2005 he was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month. To conclude the 2006 season, Smith won a Super Bowl ring as the Peyton Manning-led Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI, 29-17.
In his NFL career, Smith scored three touchdowns and in 2009, he became the first special teams player in NFL history to throw and run for a touchdown in the same season. Smith punted a total of 691 times over the course of his career for an average of 43.0 yards. Born on August 9, 1977 in Sherman, Texas, Smith played college football at Notre Dame, where he both punted and kicked field goals for the Fighting Irish. In 1998 and 1999, Smith earned back-to-back first-team All-Independent selections from Football News. Since his playing days, he has enjoyed a career in music as lead singer of The Hunter Smith Band. A devout Christian, Smith also performed as a member of the Christian band Connersvine. In 2012, Smith authored a book called The Jersey Effect: Beyond the World Championship.
