Joe Montana is most always mentioned during a conversation of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all-time, and for good reason. Montana spent 16 seasons playing in the NFL after being taken by the 49ers in the 1979 NFL Draft (3rd round), including 14 years with the San Francisco 49ers from 1979-1992 and two years with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1993-1994. Montana is best remembered for leading the 49ers to unparalleled success in the 1980’s by winning four Super Bowls (XVI, XIX, XXIII and XXIV) on teams that were coached by the great Bill Walsh and featured such teammates as Jerry Rice, Roger Craig and Ronnie Lott. He played his best on the biggest stage, which is evidenced by him being named MVP three times – a record that stood until Tom Brady won four - and holding the Super Bowl record for the highest passer rating (127.8) and most pass attempts without throwing an interception (122). He had his jersey #16 retired by the 49ers in 1997 and became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
The eight-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro was twice named NFL MVP in 1989 and 1990 and the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in the former year. Montana twice led the league in passer rating and touchdowns passing and five times led the NFL in the percentage of passes completed. In total for his career, Montana completed 3,409 passes for 40,551 passing yards and 273 scores. He was named to the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team, 75th Anniversary All-Time Team and 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. The Sporting News named Montana number three on its list of Football’s 100 Greatest Players in 1999. Born on June 11, 1956 in New Eagle, Pennsylvania, Montana played college football at the University of Notre Dame from 1974-1978. He led the Fighting Irish to a 11-1 mark in 1977 and national title with a 38-10 win in the Cotton Bowl over Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell and the University of Texas.
