Kordell Stewart, known as “Slash”, is a retired NFL player who served mainly as a quarterback during his 11-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1995-2002), Chicago Bears (2003) and Baltimore Ravens (2004-2005). After being selected by Pittsburgh in the 2nd round of the 1995 NFL Draft, Stewart began his time in Pittsburgh playing wide receiver but quickly transitioned to quarterback. In 1997, his first year as a regular starter, he guided the Steelers to an 11-5 record and recorded 21 touchdowns for 3,020 yards in the process.
Stewart in 2001 led the Steelers to a 13-3 record and set career-highs in passing yards (3,109), quarterback rating (81.7) and rushing yards (537). Pittsburgh advanced as far as the AFC Championship Game before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. For his performance, Stewart was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Year and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl. He additionally was named team MVP by the Steelers.
Stewart was a standout collegiately at the University of Colorado, where he led the Buffaloes to victory in the 1993 Aloha Bowl and 1995 Fiesta Bowl. Both regular seasons saw CU finish as a Top 10 program in the country. He was also part of the famed “Miracle at Michigan” play, which saw him throw a 64-yard Hail Mary pass as time expired to Michael Westbrook which resulted in a touchdown and a Buffs win over the University of Michigan, 27-26. After his playing days, Stewart worked as an NFL analyst for ESPN.
