Michael Irvin, affectionately known as “The Playmaker”, is a former NFL wide receiver who played his entire professional career from 1988-1999 for the Dallas Cowboys. In 2007, Irvin was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A member of the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade Team and Cowboys’ Ring of Honor, Irvin won three Super Bowls (XXVII, XXVIII and XXX) with the Cowboys and was part of one of the most potent offenses in NFL history during that time which included the likes of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Daryl Johnston and Jay Novacek. From 1991-1995, he was selected to five consecutive Pro Bowls.
The 1991 season saw Irvin lead the NFL with 1,523 yards receiving. From 1991-1998, he failed to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in a season on just one occasion (in 1996, when he had 962 yards but played only 11 games). Irvin had a career year in 1995 when he caught a career-high 111 passes for 1,603 yards and 10 touchdowns, both of which were also were career bests. That season culminated with him winning the last of his three titles after the Cowboys beat Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX.
While playing college football at the University of Miami under head coach Jimmy Johnson, Irvin was a first-team All-American in 1986 and won a national championship with the Hurricanes in 1987. During his time in Miami, Irvin set all-time school records for total receptions, touchdown receptions and receiving yards (his yardage mark was later eclipsed by Santana Moss) before being selected by Dallas 11th overall in the 1988 NFL Draft. After his playing days, Irvin embarked on a successful broadcast career with the NFL Network and ESPN. He also appeared in the 2009 season of “Dancing with the Stars”.
