Considered one of the top heavyweight boxers ever, Larry Holmes enjoyed an illustrious career that spanned from 1973-2002. Holmes held possession of the WBC heavyweight title from 1978-1983, which included a classic 15-round decision over Ken Norton, the reigning champ. He defended his title 17 times, beating such foes as Muhammad Ali, Leon Spinks, Gerry Cooney and Ernie Shavers. Holmes also held the IBF heavyweight title from 1983-1985. He was one of just five boxers to beat Muhammad Ali (the others were Norton, Joe Frazier, Trevor Berbick and Spinks). After starting out with a 48-0 record, Holmes finished his career with a 69-6 mark. He fought his last bout in 2002 and is a member of both the World Boxing Hall of Fame and International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Holmes was born on November 3, 1949 in Cuthbert, Georgia before moving to Easton, Pennsylvania in 1954. He started boxing at the age of 19 and, after going 19-3 in his amateur career, turned pro in 1973, winning his first bout against Rodell Dupree. Outside the ring, Holmes has held various business interests, including restaurants, an office complex, training facility and nightclub. He also authored the book “Larry Holmes: Against All Odds”.
