Oscar De La Hoya won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics representing the United States in the lightweight amateur boxing competition before embarking on a successful professional career from 1992 – 2008 that saw him claim 11 titles among six weight classes. De La Hoya enjoyed a near flawless amateur career before turning pro. He had an unofficial record of 223-5 and captured gold medals at the 1989 National Golden Gloves, 1990 and 1991 U.S. National Championships and 1990 Goodwill Games. In 2008, he was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.

His first professional bout came on Nov. 23, 1992 against Lamar Williams with De La Hoya winning via a sixth-round knockout. That was the start of a 31-0 start to his professional career with his first loss coming almost nine years later in September of 1999. During that span, he was named Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine in 1995. The Ring also ranked him as the top boxer pound-for-pound in the world in both 1997 and 1998. De La Hoya’s first title came in 1994, when he captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight title. He successfully defended the title then won the vacant WBO Lightweight title that same year.  By April of 1997, De La Hoya had also claimed titles from the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Council (WBC). In 2004, he won the WBO middleweight title, lost it later that year and reclaimed it in 2006.

Outside the ring, De La Hoya started Golden Boy Promotions in 2002, which promotes MMA and boxing matches. The company is also part-owner of the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. He appeared on the cover of the EA Sports boxing video “Fight Night Round 3” and in 2008, was honored when a bronze statue of his likeness was unveiled at the Staples Center, joining other Los Angeles sports icons Wayne Gretzky and Magic Johnson.
