Lindsey Vonn retired in 2019 as one of the most accomplished and celebrated skiers in history. Her 82 Word Cup medals, including 43 downhill wins, are the most all-time among female skiers and second, male or female, to only Ingemar Stenmark, who recorded 86 wins. Along with Annemarie Moser-Proll, Vonn is the only other female to have won four overall World Cup championships, including three straight between 2008, 2009 and 2010. Vonn also became the first American woman to win a gold medal in downhill at the Olympics, a feat she accomplished at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Additionally, she won two Olympic bronze medals.
Her accomplishments in the World Cup are legendary…eight season downhill titles, five super G titles and three combined titles. Vonn won her 20th World Cup crystal globe in 2016, the most all-time for women or men, and in so doing beat Stenmark’s previous record of 19. She is one of just six women to have won a World Cup race in each of the five disciplines that make up alpine skiing…downhill, slalom, super-G, giant slalom and super combined. She also won double-gold at the World Cup Championships at Val d’Isere, France in 2009, one in the downhill and the other in the super-G.
Vonn grew up in Burnsville, Minnesota and first skied at the age of two with help from her grandfather. She learned to ski at Buck Hill in the Twin Cities area combined with family trips to Vail, Colorado. In the late 1990’s, she and her family moved to Vail. In 2010, Vonn was named the US Olympic Committee’s Sportsman of the Year and was the recipient of the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year Award. She also received the ESPY for Best Female Athlete in 2010 and 2011. In 2019, she was awarded the Spirit of Sport Award at the Laureus World Sports Awards. That same year, Vonn appeared in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
