Mike Shanahan is a former NFL coach who served as head coach for a total of 20 seasons for the Los Angeles Raiders (1988-1989), Denver Broncos (1995-2008) and Washington Redskins (2010-2013). He also served as an assistant coach for the Broncos, San Francisco 49ers and several colleges, including the University of Oklahoma and University of Florida. Shanahan won three Super Bowls – one as offensive coordinator with the 49ers and two as head coach with the Broncos. With the 49ers, he helped coach an offense led by Steve Young to a 49-26 win over the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX. With the Broncos, he coached the team quarterbacked by John Elway to back-to-back titles, the first in Super Bowl XXXII over the Green Bay Packers, 34-21, and the second in Super Bowl XXXIII over the Atlanta Falcons, 34-19.
Shanahan became the second head coach in NFL history to win two Super Bowls in his first four years as a team’s head coach (Don Shula of the Miami Dolphins is the other). He won a total of 138 games at the Broncos helm, making him the most successful coach in franchise history in both wins and winning percentage (.646). He coached the Broncos to 46 wins between 1996-1998, which is the most wins in NFL history in a three-year span. Shanahan was born in Oak Park, Illinois and played collegiately at Eastern Illinois before a hit ruptured a kidney and ended his playing career. After graduating from college, Shanahan went into coaching - his first job was as an offensive assistant at Oklahoma in 1975.
