Considered one of the greatest pitchers in Major League baseball history, Nolan Ryan played for 27 seasons from 1966-1993 for the New York Mets (1966, 1968-1971), California Angels (1972-1979), Houston Astros (1980-1988) and Texas Rangers (1989-1993). An 8-time All-Star, Ryan went 324-292 during his career with 5,714 strikeouts, the most in MLB history. He also holds the all-time record for no-hitters with seven and is tied with fellow Hall of Famer Bob Feller with 12 one-hitters. His 27 seasons played is tied for the most all-time and he trails only Cy Young in starts with 773.
Ryan was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 with 98.79% of the votes, which is the fifth highest percentage ever, and is one of just five pitchers in Cooperstown who amassed more strikeouts than pitched innings (the others are Randy Johnson, Sandy Koufax, Trevor Hoffman and Pedro Martinez). Ryan is of just three players ever to have his jersey retired by at least three different teams (the others being Frank Robinson and Jackie Robinson). Ryan is a member of several hall of fames, including those of the Angels, Astros and Rangers. Additionally, he was named in 1999 a member of the MLB All-Century Team, one of nine pitchers so honored.
Ryan was born on January 31, 1947 in Refugio, Texas and was picked by the Mets in the 1965 MLB draft (10th round). He made his MLB debut on September 11, 1966. After retiring from playing in 1993, Ryan embarked on a successful business career, which included ownership of a bank, restaurant and minor league baseball’s Round Rock Express. He additionally served as president and CEO of the Texas Rangers from 2008-2013 and as an advisor to the Houston Astros from 2014-2019. Ryan has co-authored numerous books, including “Miracle Man”, “Nolan Ryan’s Pitching Bible” and “The Road to Cooperstown”.
