Pedro Martinez enjoyed a long and successful career pitching in the majors for 18 seasons for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1992-1993), Montreal Expos (1994-1997), Boston Red Sox (1998-2004), New York Mets (2005-2008) and Philadelphia Phillies (2009). Martinez was an 8-time All-Star and won three Cy Young Awards, the first with Montreal in 1997 and the last two with Boston in 1999 and 2000. He led Major League Baseball in ERA and the American League in strikeouts three times each. During the 1999 season that saw Martinez win his second Cy Young, he achieved the pitching version of the Triple Crown by leading the league in wins (23), strikeouts (313) and ERA (2.07). That season, Martinez became the ninth pitcher in the MLB modern era to record a second season of 300 strikeouts, joining Hall of Famers such as Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax and Walter Johnson.
The 2004 season culminated with Martinez helping Boston to a World Series title with a 4-0 sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, the franchise’s first since 1918. Martinez is a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame and had his jersey #45 retired in 2015. He became a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame that same year, joining Juan Marichal as the second player from the Dominican Republic to be inducted. Born on October 25, 1971 in Manoguayabo, Dominican Republic, Martinez signed with the Dodgers in 1988. He made his debut in the majors for Los Angeles on September 24, 1992.
