Shane Battier played forward in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 2001-2014 with the Memphis Grizzlies (2001-2006, 2011), Houston Rockets (2006-2011) and Miami Heat (2012-2014). He won back-to-back NBA titles with the Heat in 2012 and 2013 along with teammates Lebron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. In 2008 and 2009, while with Houston, Battier earned NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors both seasons. Battier was selected by Memphis out of Duke in the 1st round (6th pick overall) of the 2001 NBA draft. In his first season, Battier was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. A popular teammate, he was named in his final season the NBA Teammate of the Year.

Collegiately, Battier had a highly successful career the Blue Devils from 1997-2001. As a senior in 2001, he guided Duke to an NCAA Championship, earning NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors. For the season, he won the Oscar Robertson Trophy, Adolph Rupp Trophy and John R. Wooden Award, honoring him as the nation’s top collegiate player. Similarly, he won College Player of the Year honors from the Associated Press and was also named the Naismith College Player of the Year. From 1999-2001, Battier was three times named the college basketball Defensive Player of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Shortly after his college career ended, Duke retired his jersey #31. In 2019, Battier became a member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

Battier also excelled in the classroom, evidenced by him twice being named an Academic All-American and the 2001 Academic All-American of the Year. In 2015, Battier was inducted into the NCAA Academic Hall of Fame. Born on September 9, 1978 in Birmingham, Michigan, Battier attended Detroit Country Day School, where he was named in 1997 a McDonald’s All-American and the Naismith Prep Player of the Year. In 2017, Battier joined Miami’s front office and currently works as Vice President of Basketball Development & Analytics. A strong supporter for the use of technology in sports, Battier has consulted with Intel and spoken at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.
