Sarah Hughes won an Olympic gold medal representing the United States in the ladies’ singles figure skating competition at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. After her Olympic victory, she was named the recipient of the Sullivan Award, which recognized her as the top amateur athlete in the country. She is a member of the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame and International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

In 1998, Hughes took home the junior title at the U.S. Championships before claiming silver at the 1999 World Junior Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. Following her junior career, Hughes participated in the 2001 World Championships in Vancouver, Canada, where she captured a bronze medal. Hughes also enjoyed success competing in several U.S. Championships, winning silver medals in 2001 and 2003 and bronze medals in 2000 and 2002. Additionally, she claimed consecutive bronze medals at the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 Grand Prix Finals.

Hughes was born on May 2, 1985 in Great Neck, New York and began skating at three years old. After her skating days, Hughes earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and in 2018 graduated from U. of Pennsylvania Law School. She has also served on the Broad of Trustees of the Women’s Sports Foundation.
