The most decorated American female gymnast in history, Simone Biles became an instant celebrity after her performance at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, where as a member of the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team she won four gold medals, including three in the individual all-around, vault and floor exercise competitions and one in the team all-around. She also captured a bronze medal in the balance beam event. Biles first caught the public’s attention in 2013 at the of 16 when she won two gold medals at the World Championships, including the individual all-around. Biles continued her domination leading up to the Olympics in 2014 and 2015 when she took home an additional eight gold medals, four at each event. In 2019, she won five gold medals at the World Championships. In total over five World Championships, Biles has won 19 gold medals along with three silver and three bronze.
Biles has received numerous awards and accolades for her achievements. In 2015, she was honored as the Team USA Female Olympic Athlete of the Year. In 2016, Biles was a finalist for Time’s Person of the Year while in 2017, she was awarded an ESPY for Best Female Athlete (joining Nastia Liukin as the only two gymnasts to receive the honor) and named the favorite female athlete at the Teen Choice Awards. Biles also won the Laureus World Sports Award for Sportswoman of the Year, winning it again in 2019 and 2020.
