Wally Joyner is a former MLB first baseman who played from 1986-2001 with the California/Anaheim Angels (1986-1991, 2001), Kansas City Royals (1992-1995), San Diego Padres (1996-1999) and Atlanta Braves (2000). As a rookie for the Angels in 1986, Joyner recorded a batting average of .290 in route to hitting 22 home runs and 100 RBI. His performance earned him an All-Star appearance (he tied for first in the Home Run Derby with the New York Mets Darryl Strawberry), he finished second in A.L. Rookie of the Year voting to Oakland’s Jose Canseco and came in 8th in MVP voting.
Joyner had a career year in 1978, hitting .285 and belting 34 homers to go along with 33 doubles and 117 RBI. For the second straight year he earned MVP votes, this time finishing 13th. In his final year with the Angels, Joyner notched 21 home runs, 96 RBI and a then career-high .301 batting average. Joyner was also known for being a reliable defensive first baseman. He led both the A.L. and N.L. in fielding percentage two times each. As a member of the Padres in 1998, he hit .298 with 12 home runs and 80 RBI, helping San Diego to that year’s World Series, where the team lost to the New York Yankees. After his playing days, Joyner turned to coaching, serving as hitting coach for the Padres, Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers.
