Andy North was a three-time winner on the PGA Tour and twice won the U.S. Open in 1978 and 1985. North’s first PGA Tour victory came in 1977 at that year’s Westchester Classic. In international competition, North competed for the U.S. team at the 1978 World Cup and 1985 Ryder Cup, winning the former with teammate John Mahaffey over Greg Norman and Wayne Grady. North joined the Champions Tour in 2000 and captured the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf event in 2008. In 1992, North was hired by ESPN to work as an on-course reporter and, since 2003, as the network’s lead studio analyst.
North attended the University of Florida and was a collegiate standout on the Gators’ golf team from 1969-1972. He was named All-SEC three times and earned All-American honors in consecutive years from 1970-1972. North is a member of Florida’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior to turning pro in 1972, North chalked up a pair of wins in 1969 and 1971 at the Wisconsin Amateur and Western Amateur events. North was born on March 9, 1950 in Thorpe, Wisconsin. He became a member of the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 and annually hosts a golf tournament in his home state called the Andy North and Friends Golf Classic, which raises money for the University of Wisconsin’s cancer Center. He was the recipient in 2013 of the Award of Excellence presented by the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation for his fundraising efforts related to cancer research.
