Born on September 4, 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri, Watson was introduced to the sport of golf by his father and won four Missouri State Amateur titles in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He attended college at Stanford before turning professional in 1971. Watson won his first PGA Tour event in 1974 at the Western Open. Away from competition, Watson has operated Tom Watson Design and has built a number of courses, including The Links at Spanish Bay in California, Cassique Golf Course in South Carolina and Phoenix Resort in Japan.
