Barry Sanders played running back for the Detroit Lions for 10 seasons from 1989 – 1998. Considered one of the greatest running backs in league history, Sanders led the NFL in rushing four times, was selected to the Pro Bowl each year that he played and was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year twice. Sanders was also named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1989 and the NFL MVP in 1997. His jersey #20 was retired by the Lions and he was named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team. In 2004, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Sanders was drafted by the Lions out of Oklahoma State in the 1st round (3rd overall pick) of the 1989 NFL Draft. During his time in college, Sanders was a dominant player and had a season for the ages in 1988 when he averaged more than 200 rushing yards per game and 7.6 yards rushing per carry. He also ran for over 300 yards four times. That season, he won a host of honors, including the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award. In 2003, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Sanders was born in Wichita, Kansas, and attended Wichita North High School.
