LaDainian Tomlinson played running back in the NFL from 2001-2011, primarily with the San Diego Chargers (2001-2009) and later the New York Jets (2010-2011). A 2017 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Tomlinson rushed for 13,684 yards in his career and, as of 2020, ranked 7th all-time in NFL history in that category, trailing Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Frank Gore, Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson and Curtis Martin. He also ranked second all-time to Smith in rushing touchdowns and third behind Jerry Rice and Smith in total touchdowns. Tomlinson was named to the Pro Bowl five times (2002, 2004-2007) and earned three first-team All-Pro selections (2004, 2006, 2007).
Tomlinson led the NFL in rushing touchdowns three times during his career (2004, 2006, 2007) and, in 2006 and 2007, led the league in rushing yards. In 2006, Tomlinson produced one of the most memorable season-long performances by a running back in NFL history. He set a league record with 28 rushing touchdowns, led the league in rushing yards with 1,815 and averaged 5.2 yards per carry. For his efforts, he won the NFL MVP award and was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He similarly captured the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, recognizing his stellar on-field play and community involvement.
Tomlinson is a member of Chargers Hall of Fame and his jersey # 21 was retired in 2015. Born on June 23, 1979 in Rosebud, Texas, Tomlinson played college football at Texas Christian University. He was the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000 and won the Doak Walker Award the latter year as the nation’s top collegiate running back. He became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.
