Bobby Valentine managed in the majors from 1985 - 2012 for the Texas Rangers (1985-1992), New York Mets (1996-2002) and Boston Red Sox (2012.) Internationally, he managed the Chiba Lotte Marines of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball in 1995 and again from 2004-2009. Valentine assumed managerial duties for Texas late in the 1985 season. In 1986, his first full season as manager, the Rangers posted an 87-75 record. Upon taking over the Mets, Valentine guided the team to back-to-back 88-74 finishes in 1997 and 1998. The 1999 season saw New York improve significantly to 97-66 on the year, advancing as far as the American League Championship Series. In 2000, Valentine took the team to the World Series, where they faced the New York Yankees in the Subway Series. In total for his MLB managerial career, Valentine tallied a record of 1186-1165.
Before his managing days, Valentine played in the majors from 1969-1979 with the L.A. Dodgers (1969, 1971-1972), California Angels (1973-1975), San Diego Padres (1975-1977), Mets (1977-1978) and Seattle Mariners (1979.) He has also worked as a baseball analyst for ESPN and, in 2013, was named the athletic director at Sacred Heart University. In 2016, Valentine was named the ECAC Administrator of the Year.
