Bret Saberhagen is a former MLB pitcher who played 16 seasons in the big leagues from 1984-2001 with the Kansas City Royals (1984-1991), New York Mets (1992-1995), Colorado Rockies (1995) and Boston Red Sox (1997-1999, 2001). Saberhagen was a two-time Cy Young Award winner and three times named an All-Star, twice with the Royals in 1987 and 1990 and once with the Mets in 1994.
He was an integral part of Kansas City’s 1985 World Series victory, as during the regular season he went 20-6, threw 10 complete games and recorded an ERA of 2.87. That season he captured the first of two A.L. Cy Young Awards and was named World Series MVP. He had an even better campaign in 1989, going 23-6 with a 2.16 ERA, statistics that won him his second A.L. Cy Young Award. He also won a Gold Glove for his defense and came in eighth for MVP voting. He additionally led the MLB in wins and the A.L. in ERA that season.
On Aug. 26, 1991, Saberhagen pitched a no-hitter for the Royals. In 1994 with the Mets, Saberhagen’s 14-4 record and ERA of 2.74 earned him a trip to the All-Star Game while he came in third for that year’s A.L. Cy Young Award. Saberhagen missed the entirety of the 1996 season and part of the 1997 season due to injury but, in 1998 with Boston, he went 15-8 on the season, winning the Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year Award for his resurgence. After his playing days, he was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame.
