Cedric Maxwell played the position of forward in the NBA for the Boston Celtics (1977-1985), Los Angeles Clippers (1985-1987) and Houston Rockets (1987-1988). He was affectionately known as “Cornbread” and was given the name by a teammate in college after he watched “Cornbread, Earl and Me”. Maxwell won two NBA titles with the Celtics in 1981 and 1984 and was MVP of the Finals in 1981. His jersey #31 was retired by the Celtics. For his career, Maxwell recorded 10,465 points for a per game average of 12.5 points along with 6.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

Maxwell was born in Kinston, North Carolina and played collegiately at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In 1977, Maxwell helped lead the 49ers to a spot in the Final Four and was named third-team All-American and Sun Belt Player of the Year. His jersey #33 was retired by the school. He was selected by the Celtics in the 1st round (12th overall pick) of the 1977 draft.

After retiring from playing, Maxwell served as head coach for the Long Island Surf of the United States Basketball League in 1996 and later went into broadcasting, working as a radio analyst for Celtics games on WBZ-FM.
