Christian Okoye played running back for the Kansas City Chiefs for six seasons from 1987-1992. Nicknamed the “Nigerian Nightmare” for his bruising running style, Okoye won the NFL’s rushing title and was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Year in 1989 after leading the NFL in both rushing yards (1,480) and rushing attempts (370). In so doing, he became the first Chiefs player in history to lead the league in rushing. He also was a two-time Pro Bowl selection. Okoye retired in 1992 as the Chiefs’ all-time leading rusher with 4,897 yards (that record has since been broken by Priest Holmes). Okoye was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2000.

Okoye was born in Enuga, Nigeria. He came to the United States at the age of 21 and did not play American football until two years later when he joined Azusa Pacific University’s football team. He was picked by the Chiefs in the 2nd round of the 1987 NFL Draft. After retirement, Okoye owned Okoye Heath and Fitness and invested in the Golden Baseball League. He also founded the California Sports Hall of Fame and appeared in a couple of reality shows, Pirate Master and Pros vs Joes.
