Darin Erstad played first base and outfield in the majors from 1996-2009, primarily for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (1996-2006) but also the Chicago White Sox (2007) and Houston Astros (2008-2009). During his 11 seasons with the Angels, Erstad was twice named an All-Star and won a Gold Glove three times and Silver Slugger Award once. He played an integral role in helping the Angels to a win over the San Francisco Giants in the 2002 World Series, hitting .300 over the course of the Fall Classic, including a crucial home run in Game 6. In total for his career, Erstad recorded a batting average of .282 with 124 homers and 699 RBI.
Born on June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota, Erstad played both football and baseball at the University of Nebraska. He won a national championship in 1994 with the Huskers while serving as their starting punter. On the diamond, Erstad was named First-Team All-America during his final season and, in 1995, was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, which is presented to the top amateur baseball player in the United States. He was picked by the Angels in the 1995 MLB draft with the 1st overall pick and made his MLB debut on June 4, 1974. After his playing career, Erstad served as manager of his alma mater’s baseball team for eight seasons from 2011-2019.
