David Robinson is a Hall of Fame center who played for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs from 1989-2003. Nicknamed “The Admiral” due to his service in the Navy, Robinson was a 10-time All-Star and the 1995 NBA MVP. He was also a two-time NBA Champion in 1999 and 2003 and two-time Olympic gold medalist in 1992 and 1996. At the 1992 Olympics, Robinson was a member of the legendary “Dream Team” that included the likes of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson. During his career, Robinson’s per game average included 21.1 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2.5 assists. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice, first as an individual in 2009 and second as a member of the “Dream Team” in 2010.
Robinson was born in Key West, Florida. His father was in the Navy and, as a result, the Robinson family moved numerous times before settling in Woodbridge, Virginia. Robinson attended the Naval Academy where, as a senior, he was considered the nation’s top college basketball player in route to being named a consensus All-American and winning both the John R. Wooden and Naismith College Player of the Year awards. Robinson was drafted by the Spurs in the 1987 NBA Draft (1st overall pick) but didn’t join the team until 1989 when he was done with his two years of mandatory military service. Robinson is considered the greatest basketball player in the history of the Naval Academy and is the only player from the school to have played in the NBA. The following is a summary of Robinson’s achievements and honors…
Off the court, Robinson is known for his generosity in helping other in need. In 2001, he founded and underwrote the Carver Academy, a $9 million project that created a non-profit private school in San Antonio for inner-city kids. He also began the Admiral Capital Group, a private equity firm whose goal is to invest in opportunities that impacts society in a positive way. In 2018, he was the recipient of the Leadership in Education Award given by the Kelly Cares Foundation for his philanthropic work through the Robinson Family Foundation. The recipient of the NBA’s Community Assist Award each year is presented with the David Robinson Plaque in recognition of Robinson’s exemplary community service.
