Derek Lowe is a retired pitcher who played in the Majors from 1997 – 2013 for the Seattle Mariners (1997), Boston Red Sox (1997 – 2004), Los Angeles Dodgers (2005 – 08), Atlanta Braves (2009 – 11), Cleveland Indians (2012), New York Yankees (2012) and Texas Rangers (2013). He was a two-time All Star (2000, 2002) and finished 3rd in Cy Young Award voting in 2002. He also led the American League in saves with 42 in 2000 and tied with five others in the National League in wins with 16 in 2006. For his career, Lowe compiled a 176-157 record and an ERA of 2.03 with 1,722 strikeouts and 86 saves.
Lowe is best remembered for his time with the Red Sox. He played an integral role in Boston’s winning the 2004 World Series, the franchises first title in 86 years. During the postseason that year, Lowe compiled a 3-0 record. He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2018.
Lowe grew up in Dearborn, MI and attended Edsel Ford High School, where he lettered in baseball, soccer, golf and basketball. He committed to play basketball at Eastern Michigan University but forewent college after he was drafted by the Mariners in the 8th round of the 1991 MLB draft. Lowe is a survivor of squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cancer, and has supported numerous charities related to cancer, including the Melanoma Foundation of New England, Prostate Cancer Foundation and National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention.
