Derrick Mason played in the NFL as a wide receiver and return specialist from 1997-2011 for the Tennessee Oilers/Titans (1997-2004), Baltimore Ravens (2005-2010), New York Jets (2011) and Houston Texans (2011). During his time with Tennessee, Mason received first team All-Pro honors in 2000 and was twice named an All-Pro in 2000 and 2003. For the 2000 season, Mason set the all-time single-season NFL mark for all-purpose yards with 2,690.
In Super Bowl XXXIV against the St. Louis Rams, Mason had five kickoff returns for 122 yards. In the AFC Championship game leading up to the Super Bowl, Mason scored a touchdown after returning a kickoff 80 yards. At the end of his days in Tennessee, Mason held numerous all-time franchise records, including the most single season all-purpose yards (2,690), most single season punt return yards (662) and most combined punt and kickoff return yards in a career (5,086).
After signing with the Ravens, Mason prospered in the offensive system and became the franchise’s all-time leading receiver by amassing 5,777 yards through the air. In total for his career, Mason caught 943 passes for 12,061 yards and 66 scores. Mason was born on January 17, 1974 in Detroit, Michigan. He played college football at Michigan State, including two seasons under Nick Saban, where he scored eight touchdowns and set a school record for kickoff return yards. He was selected in the 4th round by Tennessee in the 1997 NFL Draft. After retiring, Mason spent time working in sports radio and as an assistant high school football coach.
