Fred Lynn is a former MLB center fielder who played from 1974-1990 for the Boston Red Sox (1974-1980), California Angels (1981-1984), Baltimore Orioles (1985-1988), Detroit Tigers (1988-1989) and San Diego Padres (1990). Lynn made an immediate splash with Boston during his first full season in 1975, batting .331 along with 21 home runs and 105 RBI. His performance earned him a Gold Glove along with the A.L. MVP and Rookie of the Year awards, the first player in baseball history to be awarded both in the same season.
He was also named an All-Star in 1975, starting a streak of nine consecutive All-Star campaigns. From 1978-1980, Lynn placed within the top 25 for MVP voting each year, including the 1979 season which saw him place fourth. For the year, he hit .333 with a career-high 39 home runs and 122 RBI. During that span, he earned three straight Gold Glove awards for his defense as well. In total for his career, Lynn hit .283 with 1,960 hits and 306 homers. Between 1982-1988, Lynn was a model of consistency and recorded more than 20 home runs over the course of seven straight seasons.
Lynn attended college at Southern California, where he won three straight College World Series in 1971, 1972 and 1973. He became a member of the school’s Hall of Fame in 1994, College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002. After his playing days, Lynn served as a broadcaster in the 1990s and has been active with numerous charitable organizations, including the FACE Foundation and Childhaven.
