Jim Morris always wanted to play Major League Baseball. However, injuries and unfortunate circumstances kept him from achieving his dream. That is until he was 35 years old, working as a teacher and coaching high school baseball in Texas. He promised his players that if they won the school’s first-ever district title, he would try out for a major league team. And that’s exactly what happened.

After attending a tryout for the Tampa Bay Rays where he was clocked at 98 mph for 12 straight pitches, Morris was signed to a contract. After a stint in the minor leagues, Morris made his debut in the majors on September 18, 1999 when he struck-out the Texas Rangers’ Royce Clayton. He went on to make 16 appearances for Tampa in 2000 before signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers and retiring in 2001.

Morris’ story was so improbable that Disney made him the subject of the 2002 movie “The Rookie” starring Dennis Quaid. The movie was a hit and won a CAMIE for Character and Morality in Entertainment and an ESPY in 2002 for Best Sports Movie.
