Johnny Miller was one of the top professional golfers during the 1970’s era, winning 25 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1973 U.S. Open and 1976 Open Championship. He also finished runner-up three times at The Masters. At the 1973 U.S. Open, he became the first golfer in history to shoot a low score of 63 on the final round to win a major. His record was tied in 2016 by Henrik Stenson at the Open Championship. Miller also was part of two U.S.-winning Ryder Cup teams in 1975 and 1981.
Born on April 29, 1947 in San Francisco, California, Miller won the U.S. Junior Amateur in 1964 before enrolling in college at BYU. While in college, he qualified for the 1966 U.S. Open, where he was low amateur and finished tied for eighth. He joined the PGA Tour at 22 years old in 1969 and won his first event a couple years later in 1971. Miller climbed to #2 in the world golf rankings in 1974 and 1975, trailing only Jack Nicklaus. The former year Miller was the tour’s leading money winner and named Player of the Year. In 1998, he became a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Off the course, Miller joined NBC Sports in 1990 and became the network’s lead golf analyst, a role he held until 2019. He also owns a golf design business and golf academy and an interest in Silverado Country Club in Napa, California. He additionally has authored several books, including "I Call the Shots: Straight Talk About the Game of Golf Today".
