Kyle Whittingham has served as head coach of the Utah Utes since 2005. In 2008, Whittingham guided Utah to a perfect 13-0 record and No. 2 national ranking in the Associated Press poll as the Utes went on to win that year’s Fiesta Bowl.

His coaching career at Utah began in 1994 when he oversaw the defensive line. From 1995-2004, he was Utah’s defensive coordinator while also coaching, at various times, the linebackers and safeties. Whittingham briefly served as interim head coach of the Utes in 2004 and led them to a victory in the Fiesta Bowl before taking over the job for good the next season. Whittingham has won a host of honors over the course of his coaching career at Utah, including AFCA Coach of the Year, MWC Coach of the Year and the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award in 2008 and the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year and Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2019.

Prior to coaching at Utah, he was part of the staff at Idaho State from 1988-1993 and Eastern Utah in 1987. His first coaching job was as a grad assistant at BYU in 1986. Whittingham played college football at BYU and was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Year in 1981. Throughout the 1980s, he played professionally with the Denver Gold and New Orleans Breakers of the United State Football League as well as briefly with the L.A. Rams of the NFL in 1987.
